Sustainable Refurbishments

Green Structures is an award winning young and innovative Sustainable Built Environment Consultancy and Architectural Practice with substantial experience in Energy Saving Construction and imaginative Retrofit schemes designed to solve future carbon target challenges.

Green Structures has an unmatched track record in Built Environment innovation with a wide range of accolades and internationally recognised awards, such as Best Carbon Reduction Project 2008 by EDIE, Best Sustainable Building 2009 by City of London Corporation and Environmental Best Practice 2009 by The Green Organisation.

The practice specialises in creating holistic low energy building solutions in the public, commercial and residential sectors and the development of cost effective energy saving designs.

Green Structures’ key areas of expertise include:

  1. Architecture and design: We provide a complete Architectural Service including consultation, architectural design, preparation of plans, models, working drawings and calculations. We also offer professional contract and project management services.
  2. Building Performance Consultancy: We provide advice on Code for Sustainable Homes, BRE ‘Eco-homes’ with the option of undertaking full PassivHaus Planning Package software modelling. We can also assist with specification issues covering all aspects of the project.
  3. Sustainable Refurbishment (Retrofit) Package: We can provide Housing Associations and Local Authorities with complete Retrofit package from tenant engagement and consultation, design and specification, addressing of regulatory issues and contract. We can also provide post occupancy monitoring including tenant induction; follow up interviews, data collection and analysis and any upgrading of future systems and controls.
  4. Green Homes: We can undertake site analysis; provide planning advice, tailored design, manage the Local Authority approval process, and full construction specification in addition to full project or contract management through to occupation.
  5. Research and Development of Low Carbon prototypes aimed at lowering energy use and carbon emissions: Through research, modelling and testing of prototypes Green Structures seeks to continually develop new concepts and products. Processes we use include laboratory trials, performance analysis and in situ/occupation performance monitoring. At the time of writing we have a full development pipeline with various Low Carbon innovations at varied stages of development. We have received a variety of Technology Strategy Board funding to further our research and development of much needed sustainable technology innovations.

In our latest project financed by Technology Strategy Board we are working in partnership with the award winning Housing Corporation, L&Q Group, to develop solutions to bring Carbon Reducing Retrofits within the realm of economic viability. These projects demonstrate our ability to dramatically reduce heat loss of existing houses and in addition enable a reduction of dwellings’ primary energy requirements by an amount substantially above what was achievable by conventional methods.

Example of Passive SpaceTM Extension by Green Structures
We are consistently pushing the boundaries with new designs and innovative construction methods, some examples of our innovations include Passive Loft® (with five projects already built and occupied), Zero Carbon LoftTM (trailing technologies never before implemented in the UK), Solar House (adapting PassivHaus model to UK climate as well as incorporating innovative Clean Technologies developed by Green Structures) and Passive SpaceTM (Low Carbon additions to existing homes, as pictures above).
In addition to the inclusion of super-insulation, air-tightness, efficient windows and other sustainable measures our projects go beyond off the shelf solutions and include future technologies such as Passive Heating systems, Passive Cooling design, Passive Heat Recovery Ventilation and Passive Climate Control along with other exciting innovations.

On top of designing and construction of our projects we also have a comprehensive post occupancy monitoring program which provides us with comprehensive and accurate data on the performance of our buildings enabling us to constantly tune and adapt our designs to insure the success of our methods. Our Passive Lofts® do not require additional heating. Three of these projects managed early summer heat wave in 2009 with internal temperatures remaining below 24°C without using any form of air conditioning.

With new and ever more demanding environmental legislation fast approaching there has never been a better time to future proof your home or office, so why not contact one of our experts for a free consultation to discuss your needs and challenges.
